Предтечей "Thunder" явился проект "Nuthing Fancy", появившийся в Лондоне в конце 70-х, в котором играли вокалист Дэнни Боус, гитарист Люк Морли, басист Мак Маккензи и ударник Крис Хасси. Эта формация выпустила один сингл и в начале 80-х сменила вывеску на "Terraplane". Под новым названием коллектив оказался более плодовитым и выпустил ряд синглов и пару альбомов, сделанных в стиле мелодичного коммерческого поп-рока.
